Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (2000/C 364/01)
Overview
This document outlines the basic principles and freedoms of the European Union. Chapter III, Equality, is particularly relevant. Article 21(1) provides that "any discrimination based on any ground such as sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation shall be prohibited." There are also specific provisions with respect to the disabled (Article 26), the elderly (Article 25), the rights of children (Article 24) and for equality between men and women (Article 23). It was proclaimed by the EU on December 7, 2000 in Nice.
