Rights and Freedoms of Sexual and Gender Minorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina: an Analysis of the Relevant Legislation

Overview

This paper was published by Organization Q and Swedish Helsinki Committee and analyzes the extent to which sexual and gender minorities’ human rights and civil liberties are protected in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Analyzing Bosnia’s legislation on LGBTIQ individuals’ rights, particularly the Gender Equality Law, this paper speculates that there are no mechanisms to uphold international human rights standards despite the fact that this law prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a party to 16 international conventions protecting human rights. The paper concludes with a set of guidelines to further the rights of LGBTIQ community.
