Chudamani Acharya

Chudamani AcharyaOne experience permanently altered Chudamani Acharya's outlook on the law. "In Nepal, there was a forest that was taken care of by the people. The government, for selfish reasons, took control of the area. Seeing what was occurring, the people fought to keep their land. The police arrested many citizens and in the process, one person was killed. It became a case of humanitarianism versus individualism and an issue that needed to be dealt with appropriately." The incident motivated Chudamani to focus on public interest law.

Gopal Nath Yogi

Gopal Nath YogiGopal Nath Yogi dreams of making human rights law a fundamental component of Nepal's legal system. His dream stems from an understanding that strengthening human rights law - and those who practice it - will positively affect the "greatest number of people possible." This realization inspired Gopal to pursue public interest law.

Yao Yao

Yao YaoYao Yao's interest in public interest law was sparked during his time at university.  As he delved into the pressing challenges of Chinese law, he cultivated his specific interests through his work with the Ford Foundation, focusing on anti-corruption efforts and criminal law in China.  Later, he worked tirelessly for the rights of farmers and laborers and the environment, and he fought to ensure proper funding for schools providing primary education. Yao slowly amassed a considerable foundation in human rights, but he would not have said so at the time because in China, no one called his line of work by that name.

Daniel Teixeira

Daniel TeixeiraFor as long as he could remember, Daniel Teixeira was always interested in human rights. Daniel looked to his mother, a Brazilian political activist, as a model for his future aspirations. "She drew me into her world. I admired her and her work and wanted to be apart of it."  The youth culture of Brazil perpetuated his interest in public interest law. "It was believed that the youth should do something different, they should give back in order to avoid an unwanted form of government from taking hold within the country."  Daniel believes possessing a dedication to improving human rights was something that was expected of him.

Lin Lihong
Lihong LinLin Lihong appeared on the doorstep of PILI on a bright summer day in August of 2003. Together with a fellow public interest advocate from China, Ms. Xu Hui, she ushered in a major new direction for PILI’s Fellowship Program and laid the groundwork for what has become an extremely successful collaboration on public interest law development in China.
